Flora
Incorporated in 1886, Flora, Mississippi, is a town located in southwestern Madison County, approximately 17 miles from the capital city, Jackson. The population was 1,546 at the 2000 census.
Flora is a largely rural community of quiet streets, gently rolling hills, and nearby forests and farmland. Some residents commute to work in Jackson or other metro-area cities, while others are employed by various businesses in the town. Industry in Flora is centered around the Flora Industrial Park, a 150-acre, mixed-use commercial park that is operated by the Madison County Economic Development Authority. In 2008, the Flora Industrial Park was a finalist in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s search for a site for a planned National Bio and Agro-Defense facility.
The town is home to the Mississippi Petrified Forest, a Registered National Natural Landmark, and the largest attraction of its kind east of the Mississippi River.
