Education

Madison County is known for its strong emphasis on education. As of the 2000 Census, 83% of residents, 25 years or older, had attained at least a high-school education. This figure is 1% higher than the national average and 14% higher than the state average. Among county residents, 38% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, more than twice the state average and 58% higher than the national average. These figures are certain to increase significantly when new census data is released, according to current trends and data.

The county offers a number of excellent public k-12 schools, most of which are ranked as “high performing” or better by the state department of education. Madison County also has some of the most prestigious private schools in the state.

Madison County is home to the Ridgeland campus of Holmes Community College, one of the state’s largest community colleges by enrollment. A number of excellent colleges and universities are also located in the Jackson Metro area, including two public and seven private institutions.
