Madison County was awarded $8.8 million in federal funds for two widening projects on Bozeman Road and Reunion Parkway.
The board of supervisors submitted the proposal last month during the Jackson Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) call for projects.
Through its Federal Surface Transportation Program, MPO will distribute $22.3 million to metro-area counties for capacity deficiency projects, traffic operational improvements, pavement management projects and small municipalities.
Of the nearly $16 million available for capacity deficiency projects, Madison County received $4.4 for the Bozeman Road project to widen the road, provide a curb and improve the gutters. Another $4.4 million was awarded for Phase 3 of the Reunion Parkway project to widen Mississippi 463 to Gluckstadt Road from two lanes to five lanes.
Madison County plans to provide local matching funds of $8.8 million.
“This is tremendous,” said District 1 supervisor John Bell Crosby during today’s board meeting. “The Reunion Project … should help to continue to jumpstart the development out there and the future development of projects out there.”
Ridgeland also received $3.3 million of the capacity deficiency funds for the Lake Harbour Drive extension project.
The funds were approved in July 2012 as part of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act.
