Madison officials are working with representatives of Target on a store design and potential development site.

Target has approved a plan detailing the store’s design, known as “elevations,” in the city, Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler said Tuesday. “The elevations have been approved by the company.”

At Monday’s mayoral debate, Butler shared an email from the company’s regional real estate manager, who thanked the city for working with the company’s designers on the look for the retailer in the city.

“Mary, I wanted thank you and the city staff for working with the Target design team to determine elevations acceptable to both Target and the city of Madison,” Stephen Eggert wrote in the email to Butler on Monday.

Butler said Tuesday that the city and Target are collaborating to make the store a reality.

“We have a good relationship with Target, and Target’s goals are the same as the city’s,” Butler said Tuesday. “I feel Target will be somewhere within the city limits of Madison, Mississippi. We will have an answer by the end of the year.”

In an email to The Clarion-Ledger on Tuesday, Eggert would not comment on the store’s plans in Madison.

“Target appreciates the interest, however, for business reasons, does not comment on possible future sites within markets until the land transaction has closed. Until that time there is no comment other than Target is analyzing future sites across the U.S.,” Eggert wrote.

A developer, The Seitz Group of Frisco, Texas, is scheduled on the May 13 agenda for the Madison Planning Commission to bring a site plan for a shopping center that will include a Target store to a location north of Mississippi 463 on Grandview Boulevard.

“The city has been working with the developer on site plans and building design for Target,” Jerry Cook, the city’s economic development director, said. “As of right now, that is on the Planning Commission’s agenda.”
