Birdsong Construction, a second-generation company based in Clinton, Mississippi, is experiencing unprecedented growth due to their involvement with AWS data center projects. Led by President Jeff Cox, the company has been instrumental in building essential infrastructure for multiple AWS data centers in the region.
“It’s brought in more work to this area than we’ve ever seen. There have been a lot of opportunities,” explains Cox.
Previously, at least half of Birdsong’s projects required travel within a 300-mile radius. The boom in local projects has transformed work-life balance for Birdsong’s team. Cox notes, “When you can go home every night and sleep in your own bed and not packing, working out of a bag, and staying in hotel rooms, it just makes life a lot more easy for everybody.”
The company has completed work on the first five buildings at the Canton campus and the first four buildings on the Ridgeland campus, involving approximately 150 workers, including suppliers. This experience has enhanced their reputation, with Cox sharing, “We’ve had other bid invitations for other data centers. Our experience really helps your resume.”
The projects have also boosted the local economy, filling RV parks, hotels, and restaurants.
“It’s been great for us. It’s been a lot of publicity. I mean, the AWS sites have gotten so much attention, and it’s such a big part for our state. We were kind of the first one in on the ground,” said Cox. “It definitely brought a lot of attention to us in a very positive way.”
