Ground broken for new facility at Madison County Nursing Home

By JAMIE LOGAN

An official groundbreaking was held on May 28 for a new assisted living facility on the grounds of the Madison County Nursing Home in Canton as dozens of officials and area residents celebrated the new addition.

Plans are to complete the addition to the county-owned nursing home by this fall.

“Some of these people have lived in Canton all their lives, and they don’t want to leave,” said Robert Martin, president of the Madison County Nursing Home Board of Trustees. “This facility will provide the opportunity to maintain their previous quality of living while having support available at all times.”

“It will be unique,” said Nursing Home Administrator Daniel Logan, “something that the county will be proud of.

“When the new hospital was built to replace the one on in front of the Madison County Nursing Home,” Logan continued, “the board of trustees saw the opportunity to convert the old hospital for a new service to the community.”

The board conducted a market study before proceeding and found that there was a need for such a facility in the area. After it was decided that the conversion wasn’t feasible, the nursing home began to set aside funds from the overall budget with the idea to create an entirely new building from the ground-up.

The assisted living facility can be summed up as a “ten-bed greenhouse,” a title which references the building’s representation of a way of life, one full of growth. With ten private rooms, each with private baths, residents of the new facility can choose to remain in the privacy of their own rooms or to participate in activities in the gathering place in the center of the building. The structure allows the rooms to open up around a hearth, which will serve as a dining/kitchen area.

Having been at its current location since February 2000, the nursing home boasts a health center complete with a wheel-chair accessible swimming pool and hot tub, therapy sessions, a unit devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and the choice of private or semi-private rooms.

Logan said rooms are projected to go quickly, and plans for a second ten-room building just like this one will begin if there is a need in the future.

Located at 1431-A East Peace Street in Canton, this facility serves Madison County and the surrounding area.
